The Analytical Essay — A-level approach
The analytical essay is the cornerstone written genre on Engelsk A. It combines close reading with academic argumentation. Both opgave 2 at the written exam and most school assignments require this form.
Essential structure
#### 1. Introduction (~10 % of essay)
- Hook: an observation, question, or quote that opens the topic.
- Context: brief situating of the text (author, year, genre, cultural moment).
- Thesis statement: ONE sentence stating your central claim.
A strong thesis is arguable, specific, and analytical:
- ❌ Weak: "This essay analyzes Hemingway's use of dialogue."
- ✅ Strong: "In ‘Hills Like White Elephants,' Hemingway's minimalist dialogue creates a tension between the characters' surface words and their unspoken conflict — making absence and silence the story's most powerful narrative tools."
#### 2. Body paragraphs (~75 % of essay)
Each body paragraph follows the PEEL structure:
- P = Point (topic sentence stating the paragraph's claim)
- E = Evidence (textual quote)
- E = Explanation (your analysis of the evidence)
- L = Link (back to thesis or to next point)
Sample paragraph:
"Hemingway's use of geographical imagery underscores the central conflict (P). When the woman observes that ‘the hills look like white elephants,' the man immediately deflects: ‘I've never seen one' (E). The hills, both massive and seemingly insubstantial, mirror the unspoken topic of the conversation — the abortion that haunts every line. Hemingway never uses the word; instead, the entire setting carries the weight of what cannot be said (E). This refusal to name links to the broader theme: how silence can speak more loudly than confrontation (L)."
#### 3. Conclusion (~15 % of essay)
- Synthesize: restate thesis in light of analysis (don't just repeat).
- Significance: why does this analysis matter? Cultural, literary, or thematic stakes.
- Optional: brief perspective to other works or contexts.
Close reading — the analytical foundation
Close reading = systematic attention to language, structure, and form to derive meaning. Tools:
- Diction: word choices and their connotations. Why "haunt" vs. "remember"?
- Syntax: sentence structure. Long flowing sentences vs. fragments — what effect?
- Imagery: sensory detail. What sensory channel dominates? What's notably absent?
- Sound: alliteration, assonance, rhythm.
- Patterns: repetition, motifs, structural symmetry.
- Tensions: contradictions, ironies, ambiguities.
Academic style and register
#### DO
- Use present tense for literary analysis (the literary present): "Gatsby reaches for the green light."
- Use third person in formal essay: "The reader observes..." or "The narrator suggests..."
- Quote precisely with quotation marks; integrate quotes grammatically into your sentences.
- Cite consistently (MLA: parenthetical with author + page).
- Use transition words (however, moreover, in contrast, consequently) for cohesion.
#### DON'T
- ❌ "I think" or "In my opinion" (your essay IS your opinion — don't signpost it).
- ❌ Plot summary unless it serves analysis.
- ❌ Vague claims ("This shows the importance of love"). Be specific.
- ❌ Quote-without-comment. Always explain after quoting.
- ❌ Conclude by restating; conclude by synthesizing.
Common analytical moves
1. Narrator analysis: Who tells, with what authority, with what bias?
2. Symbol-tracing: Track an object/image through the work. What does its evolution mean?
3. Contrast analysis: Identify two opposing elements (settings, characters, ideologies). What does the contrast reveal?
4. Genre analysis: How does the work conform to or break with its genre conventions?
5. Historical contextualization: How does the text engage with its historical moment?
6. Character development arc: How does a character's change reveal the work's theme?
Length expectations
- At-home essays: 1500–2500 words.
- Exam essay (opgave 2): ~800–1200 words in 4 hours (after summary).
- SRP essay portion: 8–10 pages.
Læringsmål
- Skrive en velstruktureret analytical essay med klar tese, PEEL-paragraffer og synteserende konklusion
- Formulere en arguable, specifik og analytisk tese — ikke en beskrivende introduktion
- Anvende close reading som analytisk grundværktøj — diktion, syntaks, imagery, sound, patterns
- Integrere citater grammatisk og forklare dem fagligt — aldrig "quote-and-drop"
- Bruge akademisk register konsistent — present tense for litteratur, third person, præcise transitions
- Selvevaluere efter de tre bedømmelseskriterier (sprog, tekstforståelse/analyse, perspektivering)
Sådan kan du arbejde med emnet
- Lav en disposition for et analytical essay med indledning, body paragraphs og konklusion
- Skriv en thesis statement til et analytical essay om en selvvalgt tekst
- Øv at skrive et body paragraph, der bygger på close reading af et konkret citat
Practice routine
- Weekly essay: Choose one short story per week. Write a 600-word analytical essay focused on ONE element (narrator, symbol, theme).
- Thesis workshop: Write 5 thesis statements on the same text, ranking from weakest to strongest. Identify what makes the strong ones strong.
- Self-edit: After writing, read aloud. Highlight every "I think" or unsupported claim. Cut or substantiate.
Exam preparation
For opgave 2 at the written exam:
- Read the prompt twice. Identify exactly what is asked.
- Spend 15 min planning before writing — outline thesis + 3–4 body paragraphs.
- Draft for 90 min — paragraph by paragraph, don't go back.
- Reserve 30 min for editing — sentence-level proofreading, transitions.
